Manama : An Iranian cargo ship was reportedly attacked off the coast of Eritrea in the Red Sea, Al Arabiya TV reported on Tuesday.
The TV cited unnamed sources as saying the vessel was affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and the attack led to several injuries.
The vessel Saviz was hit by limpet mines, Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim reported. The Saviz has been stationed in the Red Sea for the past few years to support Iranian commandos sent on commercial vessel (anti-piracy) escort missions, it reported.
There was no immediate official Iranian reaction to the incident.
A US official told Reuters that the United States did not carry out the attack.
It was the latest in a reported series of attacks on Israeli and Iranian-owned ships since late February.
The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Israel has targeted at least 12 Iranian ships heading for Syria since late 2019.
