Manama: Kuwait will close it's land and sea borders, and suspend all passenger flights, from 11 pm on Monday until January 1, the government communications office said on Twitter.

The Interior Ministry said that only Saudi nationals will be able to leave Kuwait via the border crossing.

Cargo flights are exempted from the restriction.

The ministry added that the decision will be reviewed according to the developments.

The decision follows measures imposed by various countries following the outbreak of a new variant of coronavirus.

On Sunday, Kuwait added the United Kingdom to its high-risk countries amid mounting concern over a new strain of coronavirus and banned flights from the UK.

Kuwait joins the fellow Gulf States like Saudi Arabia and Oman, who also announced similar the decision for one week following the outbreak of a new COVID-19 strain.
