Protesting JNU Students Clash With Cops ; University Shuts

New Delhi : Students at Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU), staged massive protest at the campus , against  fees hike, on Monday.  

Police put up barricades and  tried to stop students from marching outside leading to clash between them Several students were arrested from the scene Following the conflict, the university shutdown.

 The protests  began over Draft Hostel Manual which was approved by the inter-hall administration. The protesters claim the manual has provisions for fee hike, curfew timings and dress code restrictions for the students.

The protest  was  timed to begin when Vice President, Venkaiah Naidu, reached the convocation venue to give away degrees.

.JNU has been witnessing protests over a month regarding fee hike, given that there are several students from poor backgrounds pursuing studies in the campus.

“How will the poor pay if hostel fees are hiked by 6000 – 7000 rupees” asked one student.

“The vice chancellor is not prepared to hold talks with us on the issue,: said another.
