Pulitzer Prize-winning Photojournalist Dannish Siddiqui Killed In Afghanistan

Kabul : Pulitzer prize-winning photojournalist was killed in Afghanistan while covering clashes between Afghan forces and Taliban in Spid Boldak district on Friday.

The Indian photojournalist, working for Reuters,  had arrived in Afghanistan to cover internal security crisis rising from  withdrawal of foreign troops over the last few days.

“We are urgently seeking more information working with authorities in the region,” said Reuters President Michael Freidenberg and Editor-in-Chief Assessandran Galloni in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Siddiqui had informed Reuters he was wounded in the arm by shrapnel while covering the fight between forces and Taliban. Then, as he stood talking to shopkeepers nearby, Taliban militants launched another attack, this time a fatal one.

Siddiqui and his colleague Adnan Abidi were part of a Reuters team that won the Pulitzer 2018 Prize in the Feature Photography category on Rihingya refugee crisis. He also received wide appreciation for his coverage of the Nepal earthquakes of 2015. Mosul in 2016 -17 and the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests in 2019-20. Closer home, Siddiqui received praise for covering the 2020 delhi riots, farmers protests and Covid-19 conditions in the country.
