Russia has blocked access to Facebook, the already-banned Twitter and YouTube. The Facebook ban comes in retaliation for the platform’s restrictions on Russian state-owned media.
Earlier this week, Facebook and its sister platform Instagram had removed Russia Today(RT) and Sputnik from their news outlets into European Union. On Friday, it removed the news output into UK as well. Now, Russia reacted quick.
The Russian state communication regulator, Roskomnazor, said there had been 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media by Facebook since October 2020, adding that, it will also restrict access to Twitter.
The ban comes closely on heels of Russia passing a Bill that criminalises the intentional spreading of what Moscow deems to be fake reports.
