Russia Declares Temporary Ceasefire To Allow Evacuation Corridors

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine that will allow civilians to leave the cities of Mariupol and Voinovekha. The ceasefire began 10 am (Moscow time 2 am ET) Satruday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted that “humanitarian corridors” were being prepared in both cities.

Mariupol and Volnovakha are among cities that witnessed intense fighting in recent days. They are located in Ukraine’s extreme southeast corner, near the Russian border and Crimea. If they cede to Russia, their troops could join forces with those in Crimea - the peninsula Moscow seized from Ukraine back in 2014.

Mariupol, a port city on the Sea of Azov, and Volnovakha are within Donetsk - one of the two Ukrainian regions that Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized a week before his troops attacked Ukraine.
