Manama: The total number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Saudi Arabia crossed 1,00,000, official figures showed on Sunday, where the economy has begun a three phase re-opening to get back normalcy.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country surpassed 1,01,914, with 712 deaths.

The country confirmed 3,045 new virus cases on Sunday alone. The death toll rose by 36, the highest single-day virus deaths since the outbreak began. There were 1,564 people in critical condition.

On Saturday, Saudi recorded the highest single-day spike of 3,121 positive coronavirus cases.

Of the new cases reported on Sunday, 717 cases were in Riyadh, 623 in Makkah, 351 in Jeddah and 257 in Dammam. The ministry said 1,026 more patients recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 72,817.

The number of confirmed cases in the six nation GCC reached 273,005 with 1,407 deaths on Sunday. Saudi Arabia accounts for 37.33 % of GCC covid-19 cases.

As the infections are soaring across the country, the health ministry opened a temporary hospital in Jeddah and 31 new 24/7 walk-in clinics across the Kingdom on Sunday.  The hospital will treat patients with mild symptoms. Currently it has 20 beds, and will have 500 when fully operational, sources said.

The clinics, which started in Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, Al-Qassim, and Al-Ahsa, are open to anyone with COVID-19 symptoms round the clock and no need for an appointment, they added.

On 5 June, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior re-imposed a two-week curfew in Jeddah after reviewing the epidemiological situation and the high occupancy rates of the intensive care departments in the city.
