Saudi records highest single-day infections and five more deaths

Manama: Coronavirs infection and deaths continue to escalate in Saudi Arabia for the sixth consecutive day on Sunday. The infection cases in the Kingdom reached 2,402 on Sunday night after registering 17 new cases. The death toll in the country rose to 34.

Earlier in the day 206 new Covid-19 cases reported in the country. A total of 223 people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours in the country, according to the ministry of Health. This was the highest single-day spike since the beginning of the epidemic.

Five more people died of the coronavirus in Saudi Arabia, pushing the country’s death toll to 34 on Sunday. Of this, two people died in the city of Jeddah, and three each succumbed to the virus in Riyadh, Makkah, and Madinah. The one who died in Riyadh believed to be a native of Chemmad in Malappuram district, Kerala. But the Ministry of Health has not confirmed this yet. All the victims’ identities were not released.

Safwan (41), a native of Chemmad in Malappuram district, had reportedly died of Covid-19 in Riyadh on Saturday night, according to his relatives in Malappuram. His wife is reported to be in hospital due to coronavirus infection. On Saturday, another Keralite, Shabnaz(28) , a native of Panoor in Kannur, was succumbed to the deadly virus in Madinah. This incident also confirmed by his relatives. There is no official confirmation yet on these cases.

Total recovery soared to 488 in the Kingdom after 68 new recovery on Sunday, putting the total active cases at 1,863, the Ministry of Health spokesman, Dr. Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Aly said in a press briefing.

Of the total confirmed cases, 47 percent are of Saudi patients while 53 percent are expats, he said. “This shows that the virus spread is present in all sections of the society, and the vast majority of cases are related to socializing,” Al-Aly said.

He added that mobility rate in Saudi Arabia remains above 40 per cent due to the recreation and shopping. He warned that that is a worrying percentage.

The capital city Riyadh reported the highest number of virus cases as of Sunday, with 590 cases. While Makkah reported 347 cases, Jeddah has 223 cases and Madinah confirmed with 218 cases, according to the latest data released by Ministry of Health at 10.17 pm local time. 

The kingdom Ministry of Interior, meanwhile, imposed a full-day curfew in seven districts in Jeddah to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
