Kochi: For the first time in Kerala, the Medical Gastroenterology Department at VPS Lakeshore has completed 103 POEM surgeries. The team led by HoD and Senior Consultant Dr Roy J Mukkada has achieved this feat. Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is one of the most innovative and effective treatments for curing achalasia cardia, a condition in which food cannot be taken due to the dysfunction of the esophagus.
S K Abdulla, MD, VPS Lakeshore, inaugurated the function organized to felicitate the doctors who worked hard to achieve this outstanding feat. Dr. Antony Paul Chettupuzha spoke at the function.
Ten years ago, in 2013, Dr Roy J Mukkada first introduced this treatment in Kerala at VPS Lakeshore. Within a day of this highly complex treatment, the patient can drink water and subsequently eat in the normal way. Over several years, the team led by him has been successfully performing this surgery for achalasia.
"The ability of Dr Roy J Mukkada and his team in successfully carrying out such a complex procedure is commendable. The fact that 100 POEM procedures have been completed for the first time in Kerala is a huge achievement for VPS Lakeshore," said SK Abdulla, MD of the hospital. A 93-year-old man is the oldest patient to undergo POEM at VPS Lakeshore.
